Downtown holiday events will kick off Friday night

On your mark, get set — here come the holidays!

Sample the Season and the Festival of Trees will bring the Christmas spirit to downtown Powell on Friday evening.

“It’s a lot of community people just getting out and wishing everybody a happy holiday season,” said Jaime Schmeiser, the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director. “And it’s a good opportunity for people to get out and see what they have before going elsewhere to shop.”

Sample the Season will be held from 5:30-8 p.m., mostly in downtown and surrounding businesses, Schmeiser said. Stores will “open up their doors” and offer special sales while food will be served.

“Lots of yummy Christmas goodies and Thanksgiving goodies,” she said.

The Powell Rotary Club will announce the winners of fully decorated Christmas trees during the annual Festival of Trees at the former Discount Appliance building, 221 N. Bent St. Schmeiser said the Rotary Club works hard to sell tickets and raise money for its many activities.

“They do a lot of good in the community as well,” she said. Call 754-3709 for more information or to arrange to buy tickets.

Tickets are still on sale from Rotary members for $1 each, or six for $5. The drawings will start at 7:30 p.m. Trees can be picked up until 9 p.m. or again from 8:30-9 a.m. Saturday.

The Rotary also will accept donations for Powell Valley Loaves and Fishes during the Festival of Trees.

Holiday activity will continue in the downtown area throughout the following month.

Kris Kringle will pose for photos. Christmas ornaments can be assembled, holiday crafts and treats will be available, and kids can write letters to Santa on a pre-printed form. Schmeiser said all such missives will be answered.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, Country Christmas will be celebrated with the theme “The 12 Days of Christmas.” A gift show at The Commons will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Live entertainment will be performed at the Discount Appliance building, Santa will return from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Christy Muecke, aka “The Chick with the Chainsaw,” will do some ice carving as carolers sing and treats, including kettle corn, are served.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Tour of Homes will be held. Tickets and maps will be available at the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center will hold a holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission will be free.

On Saturday, Dec. 21, local stores are offering a “Shop with Dad” day, with special sales and free gift wrapping.
