Winter storm bearing down on Powell area, say forecasts

Posted

A winter storm is bearing down on Powell, according to weather forecasts.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Big Horn Basin between 6 p.m. tonight (Thursday) and noon on Friday. The Weather Service is predicting heavy snow and gusty winds with a 90 percent chance of precipitation throughout Thursday. The forecast says between 2 and 4 inches of snow could fall in the Powell area tonight (Thursday), with less than a half-inch possible on Friday.

Temperatures tonight could drop to around 30 degrees Thursday night.

"A rain-snow mix will change over to snow this evening. Snow may be heavy at times through Friday morning. In addition, winds will increase from the north this morning, gusting to over 50 miles per hour at times over northern portions of the Basin, which will enhance the colder temperatures, reduce visibility and may cause heavy snow drifting on roadways," said the advisory.

The weather predictors call for a marked improvement, with highs in the mid-60s, by Monday.
