Incoming storm to close Beartooth Highway

With winter weather believed to be en route, transportation officials are temporarily closing the Beartooth Highway (U.S. Highway 212) at 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday).

Officials plan to close the road at the Long Lake Gate -- 14 miles east of the Beartooth's intersection with the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (Wyo. Highway 296) -- in Wyoming and at the bottom gate 13 miles south of Red Lodge on the Montana side of the Beartooth Highway.

"After the storm passes, crews will re-evaluate the status of the road," the National Park Service said in a news release.

Employees with the Park Service, Montana and Wyoming department's of transportation and law enforcement are working to get the road closed.

Visitors and area residents can still travel between Red Lodge and Cooke City, Silver Gate and the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park by using Wyo. Highway 296 (the Chief Joseph).

Powell residents should also expect to see a change in weather tonight, according to the National Weather Service, with a low of 48 degrees and a chance of rain in the forecast. Showers are likely on Wednesday and Thursday, with the possibility of snow on Thursday and Friday, the Weather Service says. A treturn to warmer temperatures is predicted on Saturday.
