Longtime coach, accomplished athlete Keith Bloom dies

 

Keith Bloom, an iconic athlete, beloved coach and devoted supporter of the Powell community, died on Friday in Powell. He was 86.

The Powell native was a standout high school athlete, graduating in 1945 with 12 letters and all-state honors in football, basketball and track.

Bloom was known as the last three-sport letterman graduate of the University of Wyoming, in football, basketball and baseball.

Bloom played professional basketball in Denver for the Frontier Refiners in the National Basketball League as well as playing professional baseball in the Brooklyn Dodger organization.

Sports Illustrated named him one of the 50 greatest Wyoming sports figures of the 20th Century.

His many accolades include induction into the first class of the Wyoming Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame and the first Wyoming high school coach to be inducted into the the National High School Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame. He also was inducted into the Powell High School Hall of Fame’s Inaugural Class and was named the PHS Distinguished Alumnus last year.
