A woman wanted on dozens of warrants in Utah, Alabama and Wyoming is back in police custody.
Jamie Cleghorn, 34, was recaptured Monday by Layton, Utah, police. Layton Police Sgt. Alex Davis said a detective was tipped off by an anonymous citizen that Cleghorn was in the area.
Davis said that around 10:30 a.m., police found Cleghorn in West Point, Utah. He said Cleghorn was concealed beneath a blanket in the back seat of a vehicle being driven by her husband, Adam Wheeler.
“Wheeler had previously been contacted regarding her whereabouts and had knowledge that Cleghorn was a wanted fugitive,” Davis said in a prepared statement. Cleghorn was booked into the Davis County Jail in Farmington, Utah to await a court appearance.
Cleghorn has been sought by law enforcement since missing a July 16 court appearance in Vernal, Utah. Cleghorn apparently came to Wyoming while at large. Powell police say Cleghorn used bogus checks to defraud Shopko out of more than $1,000 worth of merchandise on July 30 and 31.
Some 42 warrants were out for Cleghorn’s arrest when an alert Cody bank teller caught her trying to cash an unauthorized check on Aug. 12. Local law enforcement quickly determined the woman was Cleghorn and notified other agencies of the sighting. Police near Thermopolis located Cleghorn, but she led law enforcement on a lengthy chase that ended only when she wrecked her car in Riverton.
Cleghorn had complained of injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Salt Lake City for treatment; apparently, there was some belief she’d been partially paralyzed. However, on Aug. 14 — with no law enforcement agency having taken a clear responsibility to watch over her — Cleghorn was allowed to walk out of the University of Utah medical center and go back on the lam.
Monday’s arrest came about 12 days after walking out of the Salt Lake City hospital.
Sgt. Davis with Layton police said his agency is asking local prosecutors to consider filing a criminal charge of obstruction of justice against Wheeler.
Among the pending charges against Cleghorn are allegations of identity theft, passing counterfeit money and checks and possessing drugs.
