About 3.5 miles of U.S. 14-A will be widened to five lanes with a continuous turn lane and 8-foot shoulders. This project is the final section in a long-term series of projects to widen 24 miles of the highway.
“The traffic on this road is approximately 5,000 to 6,000 vehicles per day,” Frost said. “This will be a challenging project due to maintaining traffic through the project and also because a portion of this project is located within the urban boundary of Cody.
“The contractor is scheduled to begin work at the Sage Creek bridge early next week, and there will be minimal traffic delays until this fall,” Frost said. “The project is starting now so the contractor can get started working on the new Sage Creek bridge. This is a critical phase of the work and will take the most time.”
The contractor’s schedule calls for the bulk of highway excavation efforts to begin in September. Oftedal Construction Inc., with offices in Miles City, Mont., and Casper, is the prime contractor of the Cody East Section highway improvement project.
The Wyoming Transportation Commission awarded the project to Oftedal in May.
The project’s scope of work includes grading, draining, milling of existing asphalt pavement, placing pit run sub-base and crushed gravel, asphalt paving and paving of asphalt wearing course, chip sealing, removal and replacement of the Sage Creek bridge, installing concrete pavement, installing roadway lighting and electrical work, and installing guardrail, fencing and other work on 3.45 miles of U.S. Highway14-A and Wyoming Highway 114 beginning at milepost 2.2 (West Cooper Lane) between Cody and Powell.
Weekly meetings open to the public will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays at the Wyoming Department of Transportation office in Cody. The first meeting date will be announced to the public.
The contractor will not work on the roadway portion of the project between July 1-5, 2013, or July 1-5, 2014. By contract, no more than two miles of the existing roadway surface is allowed to be disturbed at one time. The contractor is not allowed to work on Cody Canal crossings and irrigation between April 1 and Oct. 31 unless written permission is given by Cody canal officials.
When working on the project, the contractor will be required to maintain two-way traffic throughout the project without delays — except for one flagger station — between 7-8:30 a.m. and between 4-5:30 p.m.
“This flagger station will stop traffic just long enough to allow ingress and egress for haul of contractor-furnished materials on and off the project,” Frost said.
The contract completion date is Oct. 14, 2014.
