Victory seals a spot in state fieldThe Powell High School girls soccer program completed a regular-season sweep of Pinedale on Saturday and secured a spot in the state tournament field in the process. The 2-1 victory marked the team's second of the year against the Wranglers. “Qualifying for a spot at the state tournament was one of our goals for this season and I'm glad the girls were able to accomplish that,” said Panther head coach Brad Hammond. Freshman Taylor Swenson tagged the ball into the back of the net for a Powell goal just six minutes into Saturday's contest for her first score of the season. Junior Katie Kipp added a score in the second half before Pinedale capitalized on a late error by the Panthers to pull within a goal.“Our defense played well,” said Hammond. “Pinedale only got a couple of shot attempts in the game.”The victory wasn't without a cost, however. Maddy Jones suffered an apparent knee injury in the win and was forced to leave the contest. Hammond said preliminary indications were that Jones possibly suffered an injury to her MCL. “She might be done for the year,” said Hammond. “We should know more today (Tuesday).”The Panthers also faced top-ranked Jackson over the weekend, falling by a 5-0 count. Powell found itself playing catch up throughout almost the entire contest. Jackson scored its first goal just 18 seconds into the game and added a later first-half score before reeling off a trio of second-half goals. “I've never seen a team score as fast as Jackson did,” said Hammond. “We got off to another slow start and they jumped on us. Fortunately, we were able to settle down, but early on you could tell we'd been sitting on a bus for six hours.”The Panthers wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Cody.
