The generosity of a community can help grant an ill Powell child’s wish Friday night at Powell High School.

A Make-A-Wish Foundation spaghetti dinner will be held in the school’s common area at 5:30 p.m., with a live auction to follow in the school’s gym at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go towards fulfilling the wish of an anonymous Powell child facing a life-threatening medical condition.

Dinner guests will be treated to three live performances. The entertainment will begin with a collaboration of Powell’s fifth grade choirs, followed by a routine by the Absaroka Mountain Thunder cloggers and then a musical set by junior Sam Prestwich.

The no-reserve auction will offer items donated from local businesses as well as professional sports franchises and athletes.

Math teacher Thom Miller had his calculus class send letters to athletes and organizations requesting donations for the Make-A-Wish cause.

Topping the list of items is a signed jersey of Baltimore Ravens quarterback and Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco, signed photos of the Denver Broncos’ two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback John Elway, 2013 NFL MVP Adrian Peterson, two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner, five-time World Series champion and 13-time All-Star Derek Jeter, a signed Hero Card by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and two signed photos of Travis Pastrana of NASCAR.

Drawings will take place for desserts donated by the community, as well as a two-night stay in Yellowstone donated by Xanterra, valued at approximately $1,000. Raffle ticket prices are undetermined as of press time Wednesday.

“Our goal is to raise $7,000, because that’s the average price of a wish,” said Powell High School administrative assistant and event organizer Cindy Jacobs.

Jacobs said the child’s wish is to visit a Florida waterpark, though no details beyond that are known. Make-A-Wish children are given the option of remaining anonymous.

The event’s organization was a two-month effort from Powell High School’s staff, student council and National Honor Society students.

“Every student council in the state of Wyoming is encouraged to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Wyoming,” Jacobs said. “We found out there was a child in Powell, so they wanted to try and grant this wish.”

Senior class representative Kadi Cooley said the Make-A-Wish fundraiser allows the students to engage in community service that will “reach wider than Powell High School grounds.”

“This is the one time we really get to do something to benefit the (entire) community,” said sophomore class vice president Ben Wetzel.

Cooley was in charge of collecting items from local businesses for the auction. Cooley said she received donations from nearly every business. Local auction items include car care packages, oil changes, gas cards, restaurant gift certificates, a sculpted bear by Christy Muecke, framed paintings and prints and more.

“Everyone’s been really, really cooperative,” said junior class co-president Quin Wetzel. “Wyoming is a really active contributor to Make-A-Wish.”

Senior class treasurer Max Norberg was in charge of organizing the food for the dinner, and familial connections gave him a leg up.

Norberg’s parents own the Lamplighter Restaurant and agreed to make, heat and deliver spaghetti sauce to the event Friday night.

“Max, along with his parents have done a lot of work. They’ve really been great,” Ben Wetzel said.

Blair’s and IGA are donating the pasta, and Dale Herman of Sysco is donating bread and salad.

Junior class treasurer Mayson Easum was head of tickets and senior class secretary Brooke Nisley was in charge of collecting donations from fellow PHS students.

The elementary schools will do their part by selling Make-A-Wish stars. Make-A-Wish T-shirts, made by Vision West, will be for sale as well.

Dinner tickets cost $6 in advance and $8 at the door. Contact Cindy Jacobs at Powell High School to purchase advanced dinner tickets. The auction is a separate event and free to attend.

The student council members said more than 250 tickets have been sold already, and they expect at least another 100 to sell by Friday evening. They urge community members to come and enjoy the food, music and events and help one of their own persevere through a tough time.

“This child with a life-threatening illness really needs to have something happy in their life,” Cooley said. “Come help this child from your community with Make-A-Wish.”
