Adoption event takes place in Powell April 26-27
Wild horses from the McCullough Peaks will be available for adoption April 26-27 at the Northwest College Agriculture Pavilion in Powell, said a U.S. Bureau of Land Management news release.
The event will be a wild horse adoption and training demonstration. The bureau will offer approximately 13 wild horses from the McCullough Peaks herd management area, with a wide variety of colors.
None of the horses offered have received any training and are considered untouched. In addition to the 13 horses that will be on site, six pregnant mares will be offered via video.
Trainers from the Mantle Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Training Center in Wheatland will present free training demonstrations on Friday, April 26, beginning at 1 p.m. They will demonstrate gentling techniques used in wild horse training. A question and answer session will follow. The same day horses that will be available for adoption can also be previewed beginning at 10 a.m. On Saturday, April 27, viewing and adoption registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and competitive bidding begins at 10:30 a.m.
“Our goal is to have each of these horses adopted into a caring home,” said Cody field office Wild Horse and Burro Specialist Tricia Hatle. “Potential adopters will be impressed by the combination of size, conformation, coat colors and patterns and excellent physical condition of the McCullough Peaks wild horses. It has made them a draw for adopters over the years.”
The minimum bid for each horse is $125. Adopters must be qualified, and applications will be accepted at the adoption.
Horses adopted by video will need to be picked up at the Rock Springs Wild Horse Facility at a later date scheduled by the adopter.
