Gun-cleaning accident leads to injury in Clark

Posted

A teen was accidentally shot and seriously injured in Clark Monday night while he and a friend were cleaning handguns, according to a news release from Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.

Steward said 19-year-old Patrick Caines was shot in the lower abdomen. Caines' friend had been dry-firing the weapons after reassembling them and hadn't realize one .41 caliber revolver was loaded, Steward said.

Caines' friend called 911 around 8:39 p.m. and took him to the Edelweiss parking lot to wait for emergency medical responders and law enforcement.

Caines was treated by EMS responders on scene, then taken to Powell Valley Hospital and on to Billings via helicopter, Steward said.

Steward said he considers the incident to be an accidental shooting and does not suspect any foul play. The sheriff's office continues to investigate.
