Gun-cleaning accident leads to injury in Clark

Written by Tribune Staff

A teen was accidentally shot and seriously injured in Clark Monday night while he and a friend were cleaning handguns, according to a news release from Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.

Steward said 19-year-old Patrick Caines was shot in the lower abdomen. Caines' friend had been dry-firing the weapons after reassembling them and hadn't realize one .41 caliber revolver was loaded, Steward said.

Caines' friend called 911 around 8:39 p.m. and took him to the Edelweiss parking lot to wait for emergency medical responders and law enforcement.

Caines was treated by EMS responders on scene, then taken to Powell Valley Hospital and on to Billings via helicopter, Steward said.

Steward said he considers the incident to be an accidental shooting and does not suspect any foul play. The sheriff's office continues to investigate.

Very sad and I hope the victim recovers fully. These must be strong Steward supporters because he and the County Attorney charge people with crimes of "recklessness" and "negligence" all the time. Hope this decision is not a poltjcsl one like the Sheriff and CA make when it suits their needs.

I don't know the teen who was shot, his friend, or Sheriff Steward. I haven't lived in Park Co for over 10 years. But I think it's a real shame that when someone is hurt, "jrock" chooses to make this article about politics. Let's talk about the long road to recovery this teen is facing, lets talk about the guilt and pain the friend must be feeling right now, how about how the parents and family are holding up. I'm sure the sheriff took eye witness statements and possibly even talked to the teen who was shot before making his determination that this was an accidental shooting. "jrock", you should be ashamed of yourself.

Eva, you are pretty naive to the ways of Park county or you are already sucking up to the brownshirts. Jrock hes a valid point; the sheriff counts votes every time he makes a decision. So does the prosecutor. Otherwise they are out of a job.
While this is a very sad situatio as jrock saysSOME people get charged because of negligent or reckless acts in this county-why? Because politicisns in the legisliure have given he power to do so. Is there such a thing oas accidently shooting your friend or is it reckless or negligent under or state laws? It is up to two politicians the sheriff and the DA pure and simple.

Didn't know the Sheriff makes decisions to charge or not. I thought that was the job of the County Attorney.
