At least $440 in counterfeit $20 bills was passed to Powell businesses during the holiday season.
“We don’t, obviously, have a total amount that was passed, because we’re still finding it,” Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt said Friday.
Eckerdt said the bogus bills police have collected so far “look like a $20 bill, but if you know what you’re looking at, they’re not all that good.
“They lack the security strip, they lack the coloring detail you have in a legitimate (bill), but if you don’t look at it close, you’re not going to know it,” Eckerdt said.
He said the bills apparently started showing up on Friday, Dec. 21, and Saturday, Dec. 22. Businesses known to have been victimized by the fake currency are Hansel and Gretel’s, Maverik and Linton’s Big R Store.
“Be aware,” Eckerdt advised. “People tend to hesitate right away when they get a $100 bill, but not necessarily with a $20 or a $10.”
He recommended that people who handle money bone up on what currency is supposed to look like and advised businesses to have counterfeit detector pens on hand.
Eckerdt declined to comment on the status of the department’s investigation, saying only that it was “ongoing.”
