Cody police say they've received complaints of a white man with very short brown hair knocking on doors, flashing a badge and claiming to be an FBI agent in Cody and the surrounding areas The man, described as about 40 years old, 6 feet, 2 inches and 200 pounds, has reportedly been asking residents for personal information unrelated to Monday's abduction of the 11-year-old girl.
Cody police are asking the public to be cautious and ask to see credentials -- which should include a photo ID -- before answering questions.
"While it is important to cooperate with law enforcement officers, the public needs to be aware that someone is possibly taking advantage of the situation for personal gain," said a Friday afternoon news release from the Cody Police Department.
The man in question was reporteldy wearing black sunglasses, a grey sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown shoes. He was last seen driving a 4-door maroon SUV, the release said.
Police ask that residents take down the name of the FBI agent if they encounter the suspicious man.
Impersonating a federal agent is a felony and anyone with information about someone fitting the above description is asked to call the Cody Police Department Command Center (307-527-8736).
