An elderly Powell woman reportedly forced several cars off the road with erratic driving on Friday, the incident ending after she crashed into a Wyoming Highway Patrol vehicle outside Cody.

“She appeared to be really confused and possibly suffering from some medical issues,” said Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.

The woman was identified as 87-year-old Corinne Zednick by Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Phil Farman in Cody.

Steward said a citizen called 911 around 11:45 a.m. Friday to report a woman in a white minivan driving into oncoming traffic between Powell and Cody on U.S. 14-A at more than 70 miles per hour.

Sheriff’s deputies and Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched.

A responding deputy witnessed the woman run three vehicles off the road and tried to pull her over, but she was unresponsive to the lights and siren, Steward said in a statement.

As the westbound woman continued to drive in the oncoming lane of traffic, the deputy tried to position his patrol car in a way that would force the van off the road; a patrol trooper, meanwhile, parked his vehicle in the center of the highway with its lights flashing, Steward said. The trooper also exited his vehicle and began waving his arms to try getting the woman’s attention, Steward said.

The efforts apparently were unsuccessful.

Despite there being ample distance for the woman to see the trooper’s vehicle and plenty of space for her to avoid it, “The driver made no attempt to avoid the car and crashed into the trooper’s car near head-on, causing the trooper’s car to spin in the highway, nearly striking the trooper,” Steward wrote. The trooper “bolted out of the way of the cars at the last minute,” the sheriff said.

Zednick’s 2001 Chrysler minivan continued west for another 40 yards before coming to rest on a ditch bank.

Zednick was cut out of the vehicle by members of the Cody Volunteer Fire Department and taken to West Park Hospital, Steward said. At the hospital, she was treated for a broken ankle and minor abrasions, he said.

The crash occurred about two miles outside Cody on U.S. 14-A.

Zednick was cited for driving on the wrong side of the roadway and disregarding an officer, Farman said.

Both the trooper’s Ford Crown Victoria patrol car and the woman’s minivan were totaled in the crash, Steward said.
