Larry Eugene Sands - June 5, 2006

A former resident of Powell, Larry Eugene Sands, died Monday, June 5 in McComb, Ohio. He was 62.
He was born Nov. 25, 1943, in McComb, Ohio, to Raymond and Racheal (Wooton) Sands. He graduated from McComb High School in 1962.
He married Janice Kempher Oct. 10, 1963, in VanBuren, Ohio. At his death, he was a truck driver for Cardinal Freight Carrier. He had retired from a 30-year career as a plumber in McComb and Powell.
He was an avid Nascar fan and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife Janice of McComb, Ohio; two sons, Ryan Sands of Findlay, Ohio, and Aaron Sands of Powell; a brother, Jerry Sands (Carol) of Findlay, Ohio; and one grandson, Cody Sands.
Graveside services will be Thursday, June 8 at McComb Union.

Warren Smith - June 7, 2006

Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at Union Presbyterian Church in Powell for Warren Larson Smith, 84, former superintendent of the University of Wyoming Research and Extension Center at Powell, who died Saturday, June 3 in hospice care at Powell Valley Hospital.
The Rev. David Hunter will officiate at services. Cremation has taken place.
He was born March 18, 1922, at Glendo, son of Fred V. and Josephine (Hoffland) Smith. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Ethel M. Haarr April 8, 1944, during a furlough at Providence, R.I.
After his discharge, he completed a B.S. degree in agronomy in 1948 and an M.S. degree in plant pathology at the University of Wyoming and began his life’s work as an agronomist. His first UW assignments were in Laramie and Torrington and then he was named superintendent at the agricultural experiment center in Powell in 1951. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure, he served an outreach assignment as a research agronomist in Afghanistan from 1954-58.
Warren was an active participant in the civic life of Powell. He was a member of the Northwest Community College Board of Trustees from 1962-1967 and served one year as board chairman. He was also a past commander of the American Legion Post 26 and a member of the Powell Hospital board, the Rocky Mountain Manor operating board, the Powell Senior Citizens board, and the Silver-haired Legislature.
He was a past president of Powell Rotary Club and a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Masons, Kalif Shrine and Order of Eastern Star. He was a Past Worthy Grand Patron of OES.
His hobbies include lapidary and flint knapping, hunting, fishing and pitching horseshoes. He had a love of fiddle music and what he called “pickin’ and grinnin'” on the mandolin. He was a member of the Wyoming Fiddlers Association.
Survivors include his wife Ethel Smith of Powell; a son, Gerald T. Smith of Sheridan; two daughters, Patricia Sanborn of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Diane Feather (Lee) of Sheridan; and a sister, Jeanne Smith Krause. He loved two grandchildren, Heather Sanborn Duysen (Mike) and the late Larry Sanborn.
He was preceded in death by five siblings and one grandson.

Laura Ann Anderson - June 8, 2006

Funeral services for long-time Emblem-Burlington-Otto area resident, Laura Ann Anderson, 77, were conducted Monday, June 12 at the LDS Church in Burlington. She died Thursday, June 8 at the New Horizons Care Center in Lovell.
Laura was born Jan. 16, 1929, in McHenry, Foster County, N.D., daughter of Joseph John and Loretta (Knuth) O’Keefe. She received her schooling in Livingston, Mont.
On April 13, 1954, she was married and was sealed for time and eternity to Marvin Maurice Anderson in the Idaho Falls Temple at Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She loved raising her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed cooking and was an excellent seamstress. She crocheted afghans and lvoed sports of all kinds. She was a great mother and grandmother.
She was a member of the LDS Church were she worked with children in the nursery, taught primary and enjoyed spening time doing genealogy extractions.
Survivors include five children, Judy (Melvin) Fillerup of Cody, Keefe (Norma) Anderson of Emblem, Cindy (Larry) Williams of Aurora, Colo., Kent (Sue) Anderson of Greybull and Clint (Janette) Anderson of Shepherd, Mont.; 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Jack O’Keefe of Maplewood, Minn., Mary Tarbet of Tucson, Åriz., and Jim O’Keefe of Homedale, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Marvin, on July 6, 1999.
A memorial fund has been established at the Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 471, Greybull, with proceeds to go to the New Horizons Care Center.

Molly Ann Case - June 10, 2006

A second memorial service will be held Saturday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Meeteetse for Molly Ann (Schwager) Case, 58, of Winnemucca, Nev., who died May 28 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev.
Memorial services were first held June 1 at the First Baptist Church in Winnemucca. Cremation has taken place.
She was born to Edwin and Frankie (Doores) Schwager on Oct. 20, 1947, in Cody. She grew up in Meeteetse and married John H. Finch. They had two children, John E. and Wendy, and later divorced.
Molly married Jim Case on Sept. 22, 1990, and they lived in Saratoga before moving to Winnemucca in 1996, where she worked as a budget analyst for the Bureau of Land Management.
While living in Wyoming, Molly enjoyed raising sheep and being a 4-H leader. In more recent years, she enjoyed photography, woodworking, her pets and restoring their 120-year-old house in Paradise, Nev.
Survivors include her husband Jim of Winnemucca; son John E. Finch and companion Debbie Smith of Spanish Fork, Utah; daughter Wendy Davis and husband Bob of Riverton; brother Eddie Schwager and wife Deanna of Lander; sister Nea Yetter of Cody; eight grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Douglas M. Nelson - June 11, 2006

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22 in the Northwest College Cabre Gym for M. Douglas (Doug) Nelson, who died of a massive heart attack June 11 in Lotan, Israel on the day ahead of his 64th birthday.
The Northwest College professor of anthropology and Greek and Hebrew history was leading an archaelology dig in Israel in a summer credit course through NWC.
Pastor Megan Nickles of St. John’s Episcopal Church will preside at services. Burial will be in Thermopolis.
He was born June 12, 1942, in Thermopolis, son of Frank and Delta (Jones) Nelson. He graduated from Thermopolis High School in 1960. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Near Eastern Studies at UCLA and bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Abilene Christian College.
He had taught at NWC since 1983. He had just learned that he had been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach at Yarmouk University in Jordan.
He held his family in the highest regard. He was a beloved father, friend, grandfather, uncle and brother.
He was an avid basketball player and “official” family musician on the guitar.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. Nelson and Sally Helen Nelson; a daughter and son-in-law, Brianna Nelson Claire and Kenneth Robert Claire; six brothers, Donald Nelson, Richard Nelson, Melvin (Blackie) Nelson, Otis Nelson, Artie Nelson and Rodney (Ty) Nelson; a sister, Mildred Hart (John); a sister-in-law, Lee Nelson; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl Nelson in 1995.
His six brothers will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include son Michael D. Nelson, and grandsons Tosh O. Nelson and Julian M. Nelson.

Ruth I. Zoble - June 16, 2006

Ruth Irvin Zoble of Madison, Miss., died June 16 at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital.
She was born and raised in Powell. She graduated from high school in 1948 and went on to the University of Wyoming where she met and married her husband, Jerry, in 1952.
She received her B.A. degree in business in 1953. She lived at Madison in the Jackson, Miss., metropolitan area for the last 38 years.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jerry E. Zoble; daughter Judith Zoble Gardner of Lafayette, La.; son Daniel J. Zoble and wife Susan of Mandeville, La.; daughter Robin Zoble Asby of Madison, Miss.; four grandchildren; and sister Betty I. Condit and husband Richard of Casper.

Samuel L. (Sam) Gamble - June 18, 2006

Memorial services will be Thursday, June 29 for former Powell resident, Samuel L. Gamble, 72, who died Sunday, June 18 in Bakersfield, Calif.
He moved from Powell to Maricopa, Calif., in 1979. He worked as truck driver for over 40 years and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church.

David R. Jacobsen - June 20, 2006

Memorial services for David R. Jacobsen, who died Tuesday, June 20 in Thermopolis after a short illness with cancer, will be Friday, June 30 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Thermopolis.
He was born Aug. 7, 1981, in Tacoma, Wash., son of Mona Lisa Riddle. Upon the marriage of his mother to A.J. Jacobsen, he was then adopted by A.J. The family moved to Powell when David was a small child. He attended school in Powell and also Job Corps. A jack of all trades, his true calling was welding and turning a wrench. In Powell, he worked as a waiter, cook, a welder on continuous fence, a machinist and a mechanic.
He moved to Thermopolis to be near his parents, and he met Amy Emerson. They were married Dec. 31, 2003. He was diagnosed with cancer in September, 2005.
His two children, ages 1 and 2, were his pride and joy. He would watch cartoons with them, jump in a baby pool just to make them laugh, put them to sleep, hold them when cried and change a diaper on occasioin.
Survivors are his wife, son Michael and daughter Sydney of Thermopolis; parents A.J. and Mona of Thermopolis; brothers, Walt Jones of Laurel, Mont., and Chance Jacobsen of Thermopolis; grandparents, Byron Jacobsen and Donna Clark and various aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Pastor Harvey Seidel will officiate at memorial services. Mortimore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lois (Mayme) Chilson - June 22, 2006

Long-time Greybull resident, Lois Mayme Else Chilson, 78, died Thursday, June 22 at her Greybull home.
Cremation has taken place.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate her life was held Sunday, June 25 at the BPOE Elks Lodge in Greybull.
She was born April 6, 1928 in Devil’s Lake, N.D., to Arthur James and Florence Ellen Else. She was educated in Leeds, N.D.
On Sept. 15, 1949, she married John Raymond Chilson at her parents’ farm house. In 1952, they moved to Greybull.
Mayme worked with her husband, John, for many years at John’s Auto Service. She taught adult Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church in Greybull. During the 1950’s into 1960, she was a member of the BPOE Does Drove # 30. During the 1970’s she and her husband rode with the Canyon Cavaliers, an equestrian drill team.
Survivors include her son, Oliver Chilson and wife Ewa of Laramie; her daughter, Sherry Schaefer and husband Wayne of Renton, Wash.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margaret R. Herman - June 23, 2006

Margaret R. Herman, a resident of Cody, died Friday, June 23 at Bonnie Blue Jacket Nursing Home in Basin. She was 85.
She was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Worland, daughter of Bert and Bonnie (Douglas) Agee. She was raised in the Worland area and attended school there.
She married Carl Herman Jan. 24, 1937, and they initially farmed in the Worland area. In 1947, they moved to a Meeteetse ranch where they lived until his death in 1980. Margaret then moved into Cody.
She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed cooking and flowers and going to yard sales. She especially loved holidays and decorating her home for each change of season and holiday. Margaret always had a meal for anyone who stopped, ang guests especially enjoyed her desserts. She was active in 4-H and Bible School and taught Sunday School at the Meeteetse Baptist Church. She was a member of the Meeteetse Community Club and the Worland Rebekahs Lodge.
Survivors include her children, Donald Herman of Trinidad, Colo., Richard and Linda (Abby) Herman of Meeteetse, Carlton and Anna Herman of Cody and James Herman of Cody; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas and Linda Agee of Fort Collins, Colo., Robert Agee of Worland, Clifford and Jean Agee of Worland and Calvin Agee of Buena Park, Calif.; her sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Hewitt Jamieson of Powell; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded ind death by her parents; her husband, Carl; a daughter, Posey; a daughter-in-law, Pat Herman; and a brother, Quintin Agee; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ballard Funeral Home, Cody. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30 at Cody United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary Barbee officiating. Burial will be in the Meeteetse Cemetery.

Berniece Dawson - June 25, 2006

Berniece Dawson, long-time resident of Powell, died Sunday, June 25 at the Powell Valley Care Center where she had been a resident for six years. She was 92.
She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Lattimore, N.C., daughter of Albert and Laura (Bridges) Johnson and graduated from high school there. In 1938, she married Wayne Dawson and moved with her husband to Powell. He died in 1949, and she married Russell Dawson in 1950 and continued to raise her family in Powell.
Russell (Rusty) Dawson died in 2002.
She was a homemaker and well known for the plants and trees that she grew and distributed to many in town.
She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church, White Shrine, Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. Her hobbies were gardening and rock hunting.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne E. Dawson (Angelina) of Lancaster, Calif., and John A. Dawson of Powell; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and four brothers and sisters.
Funeral serviceswill be Friday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at the Southern Baptist Church in Powell, with Rev. Rick Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Robert Hoaglund Borron - June 28, 2006

Robert Hoaglund Borron of Powell died Wednesday, June 28 at Deaconess Billings Clinic in Billings, Mont. He was 76.
He was born on June 17, 1930 in Cody, to Robert and Elizabeth (Hoaglund) Borron. He was educated in Cody, and graduated with the Cody High School class of 1949. He attended one year of college at Northwest in Powell, where he met his
future wife. On June 18, 1950, he married Carol Joan Haney, and they settled in Powell to begin their family. To their union were born three sons and a daughter. At the time of his death, Bob and Carol had been married for 56 years.
Before graduating from high school, Bob enlisted in the Army National Guard on Oct. 11, 1947. He was deployed to Korea on Aug. 15, 1950 where he served for 13 months, and was decorated for bravery. Upon his return from Korea, he settled into a job with Conoco as a systems technician, and continued to work for them for the next 28 years. He is also a past president of the North Big Horn Basin American Petroleum Institute.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Eagles, and the Elks. He loved sports of all kinds, and coached his sons’ Little League teams. He also enjoyed wood crafts, arrowhead hunting, 4-wheeling, and river rafting.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Powell; his three sons, Jeff (Lee) of Dallas, Texas, Tom (Connie) of Twin Falls,
Idaho; and Tim (Cindy) of Billings; his daughter, Linda (Robert) Thorp, of Toronto, Canada; five grandchildren, Cami, Brandie, Ashley, Brookney, and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Hannah, his brother, Jack (Fay) Borron; and his four sisters, Marge (Lloyd) Barling, Ruth Sperry, Pat Helmbolt, and Eva Warren.
Services were held on Monday, July 3 at the New Life Christian Fellowship in Powell. The Rev. Ron Lytle officiated. Pall bearers were Bill Sharp, Ed Hunter, Don Kremer, Clay Miller, Ralph Newell, and Sen. Al Simpson. Honorary pall bearers were the Veterans of the Korean war and the Cody Class of 1949. Thompson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
