Two wins for Trapper men
Sophomore Solarin nominated for national player of the week
The Northwest College Trappers received a pair of monstrous double-double performances from sophomore Jeffrey Solarin as they picked up wins over Casper and Miles Community College over the weekend. The Trappers improve to 19-9 overall and 8-6 in Region IX North play.

Team ascends rankings on eve of 3A West tourney
The Powell Panthers moved into the No. 1 spot in the latest Class 3A wrestling rankings posted by wyowrestling.com. Powell had spent 2013 ranked second in the polls behind Douglas. A strong showing at the Ron Thon in Riverton, however, jumbled the order.
Magnificent seven
No. 3 Northwest advances seven to national tournament
The third-ranked Northwest College wrestling team captured one weight class title and qualified seven competitors for next week’s NJCAA national championship event at the West regional tournament in Portland, Ore. Sleep signs with Colorado Mesa
Panthers’ middle linebacker sets course for gridiron future
Powell High School senior Vince Sleep signed a letter of intent to play football in the fall for Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, turning down offers from a number of other schools in the process. The Sports Guy: International decision resonates locally
This was not the sort of publicity the sport wanted.
Unless you’ve managed to avoid a sports broadcast in the last 36 hours or so, you’ve probably heard the news. The International Olympic Committee made a preliminary decision to pull wrestling from its roster of sports offered in the Summer Games, starting in the year 2020. One of the original sports offered in the ancient (and modern) Olympic games was unexpectedly dealt the axe.
Panther wrestlers break away from Cody
Powell scores decisive 57-13 win over cross-county rival
Cody hung around early, but the second-ranked Powell Panthers capitalized on four forfeit victories on their way to capturing the last nine matches of the night to score a 57-13 victory over Cody in wrestling dual action on Tuesday night.
The victory, which came on senior night at Cody High School, wraps up an unbeaten season for the Panthers in dual action. It came with a few nervous moments early, however.
The Sports Guy: There’s nothing safe about a safety
Absolutely nobody is stupid enough to wager money on a sporting event like the Super Bowl. After all, it’s just a game and exists solely for Sunday evening television entertainment purposes, right?
So it is merely in some hypothetical parallel universe that I just happened to find myself in the waning moments of last Sunday’s big game staring at a 10-by-10 grid of names and numbers displaying my name in a position to reap a windfall should the final score of the game reach its conclusion with the Baltimore Ravens holding a final score ending in four and the San Francisco 49ers holding a score ending in a nine, conditions that existed with Baltimore clinging to a 34-29 advantage late in the contest.
Trapper women split games
Team topples Central, falls to Sheridan
The Northwest College women forced 28 turnovers and placed three players in double figures in posting a 60-54 victory over Central Wyoming last week in Region IX North basketball action. The contest was played in Riverton.
Thompson wins Ron Thon title
Powell Panthers place five, finish third
Depending on who you’re talking to, there’s a debate to be had over whether a championship at the Ron Thon tournament in Riverton is a more prestigious prize than a state title. What nobody will disagree with is that the only way to win a Ron Thon title is through hard work.
That’s lots and lots of hard work.
