The Powell High School track teams are scheduled to open the 2013 track and field season this Saturday in Cody. While young, the team should be a force to be contended with in 3A track once again, especially on the boys’ side where the Panthers could feature the state’s top weight unit.

Panther girls fifth in soccer poll
Boys receive votes as well
The Powell Panthers are ranked fifth in the first girls’ soccer poll of the year. The Panthers were named on six of the 11 ballots submitted and begin the year at No. 5 according to the Wyopreps coaches and media poll.

We have arrived, again, at that point of the year where everyone stares bleary eyed at statistics, throws darts at a wall, flips a coin or otherwise employs their method of preference to fill in all those little lines on the NCAA tournament bracket for the sake of bragging rights amongst their friends. Considering all the time some folks spend, it’s a darn good thing nobody actually tries to make money off the deal or whole offices might shut down.

Soccer team has 1-2 season start
Soccer season got off to a bumpy start for the Powell High School boys’ team over the weekend. The team was clobbered 8-2 by Star Valley in its opening game of the season and also fell by a 1-0 count to Pinedale in an abbreviated 40-minute contest.
Three Panthers named all-state for basketball
Hildebrand, McArthur, Smith honored
Three members of Powell High School’s basketball programs were named to the all-state teams announced by the Wyoming Coaches Association earlier this week. Seniors Marshall McArthur and Alyssa Hildebrand and sophomore Kalei Smith were each named to the all-state roster.

Northwest advances to semifinals
The Northwest College women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Region IX tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Tuesday afternoon with a stunning 64-59 upset of top-seeded Sheridan College. The Trappers also flexed their defensive might in the opening round with a 65-56 victory over Otero.
