County attorney finds Cody officer acted appropriately in October incident

A Cody police officer had no other options when he fatally shot 34-year-old Jared Christen on Oct. 11, says Park County Attorney Bryan Skoric.

Christen emerged from his home’s basement that night extremely drunk and firing rounds from a semi-automatic rifle, bringing a violent end to a standoff with officers who originally sought to speak with him about alleged domestic abuse, says a summary of the incident composed by Skoric.

Five months later, the owners of a Willwood home destroyed by an explosion still are waiting to see whether their insurance claim will be paid and if a cause of the blast can be determined.

Lady Panthers begin defining process

The quest to define the 2011-2012 version of the Lady Panthers basketball teams starts this weekend.

The Powell High School squad begins its season with three weekend games in Buffalo, playing in the East-West Invitational.

The city of Powell’s proposal for a planned garbage transfer station came under fire at the Park County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting last week.

Winter begins for skiers/snowboarders

With it being the fourth week of November, a traditional holiday is nearly upon us: the start of skiing and snowboarding season.

Both the Sleeping Giant Ski Area and Red Lodge Mountain Resort are poised to open Friday for the 2011-12 winter season.

Going “green,” adding a commercial kitchen shared with local entrepreneurs, and building in phases are some of the ways Park County may find money for a proposed new multi-purpose building at the county fairgrounds.

“There’s funds that are available out there for all kinds of different things,” said Stephanie Bennett Brown earlier this month. Brown is a Riverton-based grant writer who was hired by Park County to help fund the planned building.

Police in transition

Powell residents have likely noticed a couple new faces in police squad cars and patrolling around town in the last few months.

A rural Burlington woman has been sentenced to five days in jail plus probation for the role she played in the death of her 17-year-old son, Tylor Burke.

Donna Marie Burke Brunko, 39, had allowed the Powell High School student and his friends to drink alcohol at her residence on the night of March 11.
