A remarkable tradition will continue Friday and Saturday with the 97th annual Powell High School class reunion weekend.
It’s a rare high school or community that can boast a reunion that has continued for so many years, spread across so many generations or include so many classes.
Rather than each class planning its own date and event, Powell High School alumni work together to make the reunion a community event. All alumni, regardless of their graduation year, are invited to celebrate Saturday with an alumni breakfast, an all-class banquet and a dance. The breakfast takes place at the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce from 8-10 a.m. The banquet and dance will be at the Park County Fairgrounds. Cocktails start at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30, and the dance follows with “Hurricane Mesa” providing music.
A local family with three generations of graduates will be recognized during the banquet: Ruby Lynn Hopkin, class of 1946; her daughter, Lynn Bennion, class of 1970, and granddaughter Cicily Bennion, class of 2012.
In addition, special reunion events are planned Friday for classes marking significant anniversaries of their graduation.
As in past years, this year’s reunion weekend includes a fun run (6:30 a.m.) and a golf tournament (10 a.m.) on Saturday morning, and the public is invited to those activities.
This year’s event also features a Parade of Floats down Bent Street at 11 a.m. Saturday, reminiscent of Powell High School homecoming parades.
Another new aspect of the weekend tradition is a get-together for Powell High School alumni who also attended Northwest College. That gathering will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday at the NWC Foundation’s Nelson House, 550 College Drive.
Homesteader Museum also will welcome alumni with an open house on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The museum also will host a book signing of “Powell Then and Now,” a photographic history of Powell, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
We commend the efforts that have gone into the planning for this year’s Powell High School reunion weekend, and the continuation of a tradition well worth preserving.
