Powell planning New Year's celebration of the century

The Powell Centennial Committee is planning a New Year's Eve bash that just might be the party of the century.“We're calling it ‘First Night, Powell,' ” said Jeanne Nelson, committee New Year's Eve party chairwoman. The party, from 8 p.m. to midnight, will kick off Powell's Centennial celebration with a bang — literally.

The Powell Volunteer Fire Department will herald the new year with a big fireworks show launched from Coulter Avenue and Bent Street.

The party is so large, it will take nearly a city block to contain it.

Craig Olson's Orchestra will perform at The Commons.

“Everybody loves to dance to him,” Nelson said.

The younger crowd can rock out with a live disc jockey at “Club 100” located in Plaza Diane.

Libations will be available at both places, Nelson said.

Tickets are $30 per head and are available at Powell City Hall or at First National Bank.

A 50-50 drawing will take place New Year's Eve, with all the money from ticket purchases tossed in the pot. One winner will take home half of the total, and the remainder will help pay Centennial Committee celebrations beginning next year. Nelson was not sure yet what the cost of 50-50 tickets will be, but she said the more tickets sold, the bigger the pot.

A “Centennial Hot Dog” will be served, if the wiener is ready for unveiling. The dog is sure to turn up at future Centennial celebrations, Nelson said.

“They're concocting one as we speak,” Nelson said.

A midnight brunch also is planned. The late-night meal will be provided by Aarmark Catering, Nelson said.

Volunteers to help set up prior to the party and clean up the morning after are welcome. Anyone willing to help can call committee Chairwoman Sharon Earhart at 754-3709 or City Hall at 754-5106.

“People love to have a special place to go on New Year's Eve, and this one is extra special,” Nelson said.

“Come in your finery or come casual,” Nelson said. “Just come. I just think it is going to be great.”
