Less than a month away from the opening of the Yellowstone winter season, the Park's snowmobile policy finally has been set.Up to 720 snowmobiles and 78 snowcoaches will be allowed to enter Yellowstone each day under a temporary rule. Up to 30 snowmobiles will be allowed to travel through the East Entrance and Sylvan Pass each day.Those numbers are the result of a Nov. 7 decision from a Wyoming District Court judge.
In September, a ruling by a District Court judge in the District of Columbia had voided Yellowstone's plans for the upcoming winter, throwing this season's motorized snow travel into doubt.
In response to the D.C. judge's decision, Yellowstone had proposed a separate temporary plan allowing 318 snowmobiles each day into the Park. That plan, which the Park County Commission had criticized as too limiting, will now be shelved in favor of the 720-per-day limit.
The 720 limit will last only until the Park comes up with a final, permanent policy.
Yellowstone's winter season opens Dec. 15.
