Panther soccer hangs 13 goals on PinedaleCall it Chicago-style soccer. The Powell Panther boys scored early and often Saturday morning in a 13-0 rout of visiting Pinedale. The win came on the heels of a 2-0 loss to Jackson on Friday. The Panthers' offensive attack was relentless throughout Saturday's contest. It took just over a minute for Monte Nickles to send the first of his five goals into the net and things only moderately slowed from there. Powell's offense kept the pressure on across the width of the field, attacking both wings and mixing in the occasional attempt to split the defense down the center. Pinedale rarely had a chance to relax as the ball rarely crossed the midfield stripe in either half. In addition to Nickles' five goals, the Panthers received hat-trick performances from Greg Randolph and Jason Rand, both of whom finished with three goals. Dewey Schwahn and Billy Cummings accounted for Powell's other two scores. With the exception of a couple late-game runs by Pinedale, Powell goalkeeper Sam Wise had very little to do throughout the bulk of the contest. With the victory, Powell assured itself of a spot in the 3A state tournament. The Panthers will face the top team from the 3A East conference — likely Buffalo — in the first round of state tournament action. Before the Panthers can think about that contest, however, the team hosts Cody on Thursday. The game will be the final regular-season contest for both teams and the final home game for the 11 seniors on the Panthers' varsity roster. Powell carries a 6-5-2 record into that contest.
