Thumbs up to the Powell High School boys track team for bringing home yet another state title.

The thinclads claimed the crown in Casper on Saturday, edging Douglas — yes, once again! — for the title. The Panthers scored heavily in field events to earn enough points to clinch the championship.

They join the football, volleyball, wrestling and drama teams in earning state crowns for Powell. The effort, talent and determination of our high school students and their coaches have resulted in all this success and acclaim.

What a magnificent year they have had.

Thumbs up to the new World War I memorial that was dedicated in Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park in Cody on Monday.

The memorial honors the dozens of Wyoming residents who gave their lives for their country during the Great War. It joins memorials to Americans with ties to Wyoming who served in armed conflicts since the Civil War.

It is entirely appropriate that the new memorial was dedicated in 1914, the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. We hope such a global conflict never occurs again; we see no need for World War III.

A regretful thumbs down to the plaque at the new memorial that lists the names of the fallen.

The people who created the memorial worked hard, we’re told, researching the list of the fallen in the National Archives, state archives as well as searching records across Wyoming. We applaud them for their efforts.

That’s why it was disappointing that the names William Francis Pittinger and Gay W. Hughes were not on the plaque. The men joined the Army from Powell during World War I, and both fell in combat in France in 1918.

It would seem difficult to miss them — the Powell American Legion Post, located a little more than 20 miles from the park, is named in their honor.

We hope this omission can be corrected.

Thumbs up to lilacs, which are in bloom across the area.

The gorgeous violet-colored bushes are stunning sights that brighten the area and our moods. The wonderful fragrance is sheer joy, bringing a welcome perfume to the air.

While we spend so much of our time looking at screens of all manner and shape, we sometimes ignore the beauty all around us. These lilacs remind us of the majestic creations that surround us.

Thumbs down to the latest mass killing in our nation.

The twisted, evil little man who stabbed three people and shot three more to death in Isla Vista, Calif., on Friday joins a far-too-long list of villains. Frankly, we’re weary of such horrors.

It’s worthwhile to debate mental illness, gun control and other topics. There is much to discuss about our society and why mass killings appear to be on the rise.

We have no solutions but welcome discussions and suggestions to try to stem this bloody tide. Enough!
