For Christians and Jews, it’s Jerusalem. For Muslims, Makkah. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya. But for those who find their religious experiences on top of mountains adorned with iced-over waterfalls, it doesn’t get any holier than Shoshone’s South Fork.

After seeing a fantastic, if somewhat unexpected, performance at the 3A West Conference meet Feb. 9, fans of the Powell High School swimming and diving team will be rooting for an equally impressive encore this weekend.

The Panthers will travel to Gillette Thursday afternoon for the 3A State Championship meet. The two-day meet will pit state qualifiers from 11 Wyoming 3A schools.

Coming off a second place conference finish in front of their home crowd, the Panther swimmers are faster than they’ve been all season. Powell will boast a 13-man squad, each of whom swam at least one personal best time at conference.

Panthers close in on second place

The Powell Panthers’ boys’ basketball team is getting hot at the right time as seeding for the 3A West regional tournament starts to take shape.

LaPierre named top swimmer, Rodriguez top assistant coach

Technically, it’s only second place, but the Powell High School boys’ swimmers and divers feel like winners following the 3A West conference meet.

“They were pretty motivated to swim in front of their home town,” said assistant coach Jerry Rodriguez. “Being home and rested, and not traveling…that definitely helps any team.”

Powell Panthers complete season sweeps of Lyman, Mountain View

The Panthers are sitting in a tie for second place in the 3A West conference following a weekend that saw them beat their opponents by a combined 41 points.

A week after embarking on a winless road trip to Star Valley and Jackson, the Powell High School boys’ basketball team beat No. 3 Lyman and Mountain View at home. The two-game stretch marked the first time all season Powell has won consecutive games since the last time they faced Lyman and Mountain View. A third-straight game was won against Cody Jan. 11.

Powell hosts conference meet

After competing in three meets over five days, the Powell High School swimming and diving team is preparing for this weekend’s 3A West conference meet.

The meet will be at the Powell Aquatic Center Feb. 8-9. Friday’s preliminary events start at noon and Saturday’s finals begin at 10 a.m.

Of my six years in Sacramento, I’d say about a total of four of them were spent as a single man*, and for the most part, it was awesome.

I had the same roommate/best friend for most of those years and he, too, spent most of his days sans-girlfriend. This made for many awesome “guy nights” that played something like a drawn-out movie party montage complete with beer, laughter, fruit-chucking (NOT a euphemism!) and beer.

Their faces said it all.

The second floor of the lodge at Meadowlark Ski Resort, just east of Ten Sleep in the Big Horn Mountains, was packed with tables, backpacks, food and people. Lots of people.

Senior Jarred LaPierre won the 500 free, qualified in the 200 IM, and the Powell Panthers took second at the Lander Invitational last Saturday.

Three other Panthers added new events and another set a personal best time.

Cragoe scores season-high in win

Fast starts in back-to-back games led to two very different results this weekend for the Powell Panthers boys’ basketball team.

The Panthers routed the Pinedale Wranglers on Saturday 68-36 less than 24 hours after falling to the Lander Tigers 55-41.
