The Powell Pioneers are better than they are lucky.

Powell won the Northwest Division and an automatic bid into the state tournament when it dodged a coin flip and beat the Cody Cubs 4-2 in a one-game playoff Saturday evening.

The Powell Swim Club boasted two state champions and a runner-up at the 2013 Wyoming Summer Longcourse Championships in Gillette last weekend.

Powell’s Babe Ruth All-Stars made it to state after all, but weren’t able to take advantage of their opportunity.

Powell made it to state as the runner-up in the Northwest District Tournament when the Southwest Region only advanced one team. The local team went 0-3 at state, and failed to reach bracket play.

If Powell’s downtown seemed unusually busy this Sunday and Monday, and the town’s bike racks seemed strangely full, it’s because it was and they were.

Powell’s best youth baseball players are headed to Riverton Wednesday for the Wyoming District 1 Little League Tournament.

The Powell Minors Division All-Star Team (ages 9-10) and Powell Majors Division All-Star Team (ages 11-12) will each battle for a spot in Wyoming’s state Little League tournament in Laramie July 24-27.

Powell Swim Club’s summer season is ramping up with two weekend meets that will provide a new set of challenges to eight Powell swimmers.

The Powell Pioneers staved off a late Lovell Mustangs comeback to win their third league game of the season 11-9 Monday night in Cowley.
