Powell golfers will try to drive straight and far so that those who are ill might not have to.

The 21st annual Heartland Golf Classic will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Powell Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Powell Medical Foundation’s effort to provide transportation to those who need help getting to and from medical appointments.

Forty-seven PGC golfers compete in two-day tournament

The senior men’s champion shot the overall lowest score as the Powell Golf Club held its Club Championship last weekend.

Jerry Herweyer carded a 155 for the lowest total during the two-day event. Zane Bushnell won the men’s championship with a 157, while Laurie Lee won the women’s championship with a 171 and one-hole playoff victory.

As a young man, Ati Bekes’ life was spent in the air.

A quarter-century later the former Hungarian Air Force pilot has excelled at most every mode of transportation man has come up with.

College football season is fast approaching and I am excited for how excited you are.

Look at you, wearing your team’s colors, driving around town in a truck with your alma mater’s decal on the rear window. You know, the cool one with the outline of the animal/warrior/intertwined letters.

Disappoint with 1-2 record in Gillette

Everything was going the way of the Powell Pioneers — until it wasn’t.

The North’s top-seeded Pioneers finished their season a day before they had hoped, with a 15-10 loss to No. 4 Gillette Friday at the American Legion Wyoming State A tournament.

The Powell Pioneers are considered a young baseball team.

With just one player ineligible to return to the team next year, many of this year’s players had room to grow and improve.

Cale Wright, 9, isn’t quite old enough to play for Powell’s American Legion team, but if he ever dons the Pioneers’ orange and black, expect him to be ahead of the learning curve.

Nearly a half-century after his high school track and field career ended, Martin Garhart found himself back at it at the Wyoming Senior Olympics in Casper July 10-13.

The Powell Pioneers are heading into the state tournament in Gillette as the North District’s No. 1 seed and it’s no wonder.

The Pioneers boast the most first-team All-District players (three) of any North team, and are tied for the second-most total players (four) to be named to the squad of stars. Frankie Vogt, Hayden Cragoe and Cory Heny were each named to the All-District first team, and Brendon Phister made the second team.

Star swimmer Tracy headed to major regional meet next week

Amanda Tracy is fast. A quick look at her times and state medals will tell you that.

But being recognized as fast in Wyoming is one thing. Getting the western United States to take notice of your speed is another.

The Powell Pioneers begin a best-of-three series against the Douglas Cats today (Thursday) in Douglas.

While the rest of the teams at the district tournament will be fighting for a chance to advance to state, Powell and Douglas will be jockeying for position. The series winner will take the North’s No. 1 seed heading into the state tournament in Gillette next week.
