Thursday’s hour-long memorial service featured emotional speeches by Stringer’s children, fellow coaches and friends.

Stringer’s family sat at field level, as did dozens of current and former Panther players and coaches. The home side’s bleachers overflowed with people who came from near and far to pay their respects to the teacher, coach, father and husband.

Tremendous outpouring of support for late football coach and his family

The Powell Panthers football team has enjoyed two straight undefeated seasons, but it was dealt an unimaginable loss Friday morning.

Panthers football coach and PHS teacher Jim Stringer died from an apparent pulmonary cardiac arrest suffered around 11:05 a.m. at his home on Lane 9 1/2 in rural Powell. Stringer was taken by ambulance to Powell Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Park County Coroner Tim Power. Stringer was 44.

He was never the tallest guy on the field, yet Jim Stringer always carried a towering presence.

I first met coach Stringer in his Powell High School athletic’s office, where I interviewed him for a 2013 season preview story.

Not only had I never met the man, I hadn’t even seen him.
