Late spring storm

Montana and Wyoming transporation departments were forced to use rotary industrial-size snow blowers to move snow in both the Big Horn and Beartooth mountains recently. Beartooth Pass was closed last week, as was the road to Burgess Junction in the Big Horns. U.S. Highway 14-A between Lovell and Burgess Junction is now open as is U.S. Highway 212 between Wyo. 296/U.S. 212 junction and Red Lodge or Cooke City, Mont. As of Monday, June 3, Beartooth Lake snotel site, at 9,360 feet above sea level, reported a total of 39 inches of snow. Burgess Junction snotel, at 7,880 feet, reported no snow, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

East gate takes flight

A swan soars above Hayden Valley Sunday morning. Locals and tourists descended on Yellowstone National Park though the East Entrance opening weekend. Thanks to local fundraising efforts that covered the costs of state snowplows, the entrance opened on time.

Boys win to begin season

Kye Catlin clears a hurdle while rounding the final turn of the boys’ 300-meter hurdles on Thursday. Catlin won this heat race, but placed fourth overall in the final standings. Teammate Justin Theriault can also be seen in the race.

Lady panthers take second as 12 events qualify for state

Powell’s boys dominated action on the track last Thursday as the Panthers comfortably won the boys’ team title at the season’s opening meet in Cody. The Panther girls finished as runner-up behind cross-county rival Cody.
