PHS Girls take second at home invite

The Powell Panthers made themselves right at home on Saturday as the boys placed first and the girls second at the L.A. Kohnke Invitational. The Panthers’ annual home track meet was held in Cody due to problems with Powell’s own track.

“We owe a big thanks to all of the volunteers we had,” said Panther track coach Scott Smith. “It was amazing, especially considering we did the meet in Cody instead of at home. We had great people serving our kids and the gracious hospitality of the Cody staff was a great resource for us as well.”

Despite snow, Yellowstone begins to open

It may technically have been the start of the summer season, but visitors who took advantage of Yellowstone National Park’s opening weekend encountered the unmistakable remnants of winter.

Park roads linking Mammoth to the gateway community of West Yellowstone, Mont., the Norris Geyser Basin to the Canyon area and Madison Junction to Old Faithful opened to motorized vehicles Friday morning. Snow, however, was the overwhelming story for many of Yellowstone’s opening weekend visitors.

Break out the asterisk. Much like Argentina still raises hackles among English soccer fans for Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal, Panther soccer fans will likely remember and discuss the Jackson “Leap of Faith” this past Friday for some time to come. 

Young Panthers open competition

The Powell High School tennis teams opened spring competition last Tuesday with identical 5-0 losses at the hands of Cody. Powell Middle School students competed at Cody the same day.

On the high school side, Lacey Eckerdt dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Sharon Davis at No. 1 singles. The No. 2 singles match ended in a 6-3, 6-2 victory for Cody’s Katie Menig over Powell’s Brandi Voss.

On the football field, Chris Cooley’s hands have earned him a living as a tight end. The two-time NFL Pro Bowl selection has been said to have hands capable of catching any ball thrown his direction.

On this day, however, Cooley’s hands are being employed for a different purpose. Starting with a lump of clay, Cooley’s hands work and shape the material as it spins around on a potter’s wheel. A subtle application of pressure here, a touch there, and suddenly a work of art springs to life.

Even when less than full strength, the Powell Panthers demonstrated on Saturday that they are still a formidable opponent on the track oval.

With a lineup trimmed by injury and absence and tailored down still further to account for the wet conditions at the start of the meet, the Panthers’ boys’ track team captured its third team title in as many meets with a 149-122 victory over host Lovell on Saturday. Park County rival Cody placed third with 117.5 points.

Powell High School senior Kyle Sullivan will continue his stellar track career at the University of Wyoming in the fall. The Cowboys made official Sullivan’s decision last Thursday.

“It feels good knowing I’ll be wearing brown and gold next year,” Sullivan said of his choice.
