We have arrived, again, at that point of the year where everyone stares bleary eyed at statistics, throws darts at a wall, flips a coin or otherwise employs their method of preference to fill in all those little lines on the NCAA tournament bracket for the sake of bragging rights amongst their friends. Considering all the time some folks spend, it’s a darn good thing nobody actually tries to make money off the deal or whole offices might shut down.

Soccer season got off to a bumpy start for the Powell High School boys’ team over the weekend. The team was clobbered 8-2 by Star Valley in its opening game of the season and also fell by a 1-0 count to Pinedale in an abbreviated 40-minute contest.

Hildebrand, McArthur, Smith honored
Three members of Powell High School’s basketball programs were named to the all-state teams announced by the Wyoming Coaches Association earlier this week. Seniors Marshall McArthur and Alyssa Hildebrand and sophomore Kalei Smith were each named to the all-state roster.

The Trappers also flexed their defensive might in the opening round with a 65-56 victory over Otero.

Trappers finish 15-15, draw Otero to open Region IX tournament
Northwest College’s sophomores went out in style, defeating Western Wyoming 90-80 in overtime in their final home contest of the 2012-2013 season. The team fell 65-52 at Gillette in its final regular-season contest to finish 8-8 overall in Region IX North play and 15-15 in the regular season.

Panther Wrestling wins another 3A state title
PHS junior Zach Thompson captured the 195-pound state title by fall with 28 seconds left in his match against Star Valley’s Jordan Semadeni to clinch the 2013 Class 3A state championship for the Panthers. Thompson was one of two Panther champions crowned on the day.
