The public has an opportunity to voice its opinions on a variety of conservation issues in a Wednesday, April 29, meeting before federal government representatives from Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) agencies. 

Who is worried about climate change?

I am. When I see the weird weather patterns that continue to plague Powell, such as scant rainfall this spring hampering agricultural success, I worry.

Because a number of bears are frequenting the area, The Nature Conservancy has temporarily closed the Heart Mountain hiking trail for the sake of public safety.

Grizzly and black bears are in the area, but the biggest concern is grizzlies, said Brian Peters, who manages Heart Mountain Ranch with his wife, Carrie.

Powell’s ground isn’t parched, but it is a mite thirsty.

Rain and snow have been scant so far this year as May — historically the heaviest precipitation month — nears. 

Local irrigation districts are planning to deliver water around the customary time, although it appears farmers are planting a mite early.

The Bureau of Reclamation had predicted sufficient spring runoff to Buffalo Bill Reservoir for irrigation this year based on March 1 projections, but the April forecast may be less.

Lots of flotsam has turned up on the Shoshone River facing Jan Clements’ place in the Eaglenest subdivision since the water level at Willwood Dam was reduced.

Classic-style Western movie shorts ride into Powell Wednesday
