Hundreds gather to honor late teacher, coach, husband and father 

On a hot July morning best suited for the first two-a-day practices, Powell Panther football players, coaches and hundreds of their friends and family filled Panther Stadium to honor the late Jim Stringer.

Thursday’s hour-long memorial service featured emotional speeches by Stringer’s children, fellow coaches and friends.

Stringer’s family sat at field level, as did dozens of current and former Panther players and coaches. The home side’s bleachers overflowed with people who came from near and far to pay their respects to the teacher, coach, father and husband.

Swede Fire grows to 1,500 acres

Will be allowed to burn, say officials

The Swede Fire on the North Fork of the Shoshone River had grown to 1,500 acres by Sunday.

Lightning ignited the fire that was reported Wednesday by a member of the Shoshone National Forest fire crew, said Kristie Salzmann, Shoshone spokesperson.

Postseason brings new hope

Pioneers need two wins to qualify for state tournament 

Memories of a forgettable regular season can be replaced with postseason triumphs beginning today (Thursday) in Cody.

The Powell Pioneers will enter the Single A North District Tournament at 4 p.m. today hoping to prove worthy of a state tournament berth despite a 16-26 overall record.

Tremendous outpouring of support for late football coach and his family  

The Powell Panthers football team has enjoyed two straight undefeated seasons, but it was dealt an unimaginable loss Friday morning.

Panthers football coach and PHS teacher Jim Stringer died from an apparent pulmonary cardiac arrest suffered around 11:05 a.m. at his home on Lane 9 1/2 in rural Powell. Stringer was taken by ambulance to Powell Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Park County Coroner Tim Power. Stringer was 44.
