Powell girls claimed second at state last year; 10 from that team return 

Although the head coach can’t predict the team’s prospects this early in the season, the Powell High School girls swimming and diving team’s future looks bright.

The girls commence the season at 4 p.m. Friday in Lander. The next meet will be 2 p.m. the following Friday in Cody.

Raymond Uno returned to Heart Mountain last week.

Uno, 83, first arrived in the windswept high plains of northwest Wyoming in 1942 as a prisoner, held in an armed camp because he was of Japanese ancestry.

Defending state champion Volleyball team eager for another chance at title  

Powell High School volleyball players suggested that last season, low expectations statewide allowed the Panthers to take the competition by surprise.

No such luck this year.

After winning the Class 3A state championship in 2013, PHS senior Kelsey Marchant summed up her team’s current situation as a definite challenge.

During a presentation laced with humor last week, Northwest College President Stefani Hicswa presented her “state of the college” address.

NWC classes opened Monday.

Among the highlights in Hicswa’s speech was the announcement of a new, $2 million endowment fund, the Forest Allen Family Ag Scholarship Endowment, recently established through the Northwest College Foundation. The fund will benefit students in the NWC agriculture program.
