Tribune photo by Gib Mathers Powell Volunteer Fire Department rookies braved training under fire Saturday when they intentionally torched a house on Road 8 northeast of Powell.
The owners, Peter and Chris Graber, wanted the house a, so the department accommodated them by using the fire as a training exercise. It provided ventilation training and search procedures for the new recruits, said Assistant Fire Chief Sam Rodriguez.
Smelly, coal-black smoke was swirling out the door as firefighters in full gear including oxygen masks crawled into the murky interior.
At one point, the temperature was 1,200 degrees.
Rodriguez said the plan was to make the lesson as realistic as possible, so the guys will have experience when they battle the real thing.
Rodriguez said he was pleased with the new recruits, calling them excited and motivated.
