City begins search for aquatics facility superintendent

While it will be months before swimmers dive into the new pool, the City of Powell is getting a jump start on hiring a superintendent to oversee the aquatic center.

The city will advertise the position until mid-November. City Administrator Zane Logan said the hope is to hire someone around Thanksgiving and have him or her start in December.

Though the pool isn't slated to be completed until January 2010, the superintendent has plenty of work to do before the opening day, Logan said.

“That individual is going to be very busy between now and next year,” he said.

The superintendent will recommend a budget, schedule and other staff positions for the city council and mayor to approve. Logan said he wants to hire a superintendent and have everything in place so “when it does open, we're ready for it.”

Logan said there will be an aquatic department, similar to the parks or streets departments, with the superintendent as the department head. The city is financially responsible for maintaining the aquatic center and has control over its operations, he said.

Though the city will operate the facility, Logan said he values community involvement in the new facility.

“We'll make sure we get input from the community,” he said.

Multiple groups will use the facility — schools, the Boys and Girls Club, the Powell Swim Club, Swim America, Northwest College and community members — and the superintendent will oversee scheduling.

“The schedule will be pretty tight,” Logan said. “And the more use, the better.”

Logan said the superintendent will have a lot of work to do, and it's also beneficial for that person to be around during the pool construction.

The city is advertising for someone with experience in recreation administration, good communication skills and the ability to work with the public. Logan said the city is looking at advertising the position in other locations and professional sites. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Nov. 14.

“Our hope is that we find someone who can help us and has experience,” Logan said.
