Panther boys capture track title

Girls' team third over weekendThe Powell High School boys' track team ran away from the competition on Saturday while the girls finished third at the 2010 L.A. Kohnke Invitational in Powell. The Panthers also picked up a pair of new automatic qualifiers for the state track and field championships. “I was a bit surprised at our team scores with the number of kids we were missing that were on a band trip,” said Powell head coach Scott Smith. “We really do have some of our young kids starting to really step up and score some points for us. That's the kind of improvement we love to see, because that is really what our No. 1 goal is —to have every kid improve every week.”

“In Drew's case, the jumps weren't a surprise, but his breaking through and beating Quinn (Rivera, from Cody) for the first time, especially overcoming a poor start, was a very big race,” Smith said. “In addition, he threw in a second-place finish in the 200 for a very near perfect day. Kyle ran very well in both hurdle events, but he really came through big by besting his previous season's best in the high jump by four inches.”

The Panthers also received a championship from Zach Thiel in the 800. Thiel went out quick in the race and led pretty much wire-to-wire, pulling away over the final 100 meters for a two-second margin of victory.

As a team, the Panther boys tallied 152 points to outdistance Cody (112), Lovell (101), Riverton (100) and the remainder of the meet field.

On the girls' side of the competition, Kendra Ostrom earned automatic qualifier status in the high jump, winning the event with a jump of 5'1”.

“It was really nice to see Kendra break through and not only pre-qualify, but beat a very talented field,” said Smith. “Many of the girls she beat will be at the track classic, so it was really something she can use to build on.”

The Panthers' other automatic qualifier was provided courtesy of the 4x800 relay team. Alyssa Rodriguez, Skye Albert, Brooke Nisley and Kassey MacDonald joined forces to make eight laps of the Powell High School track in a time of 10:44.41.

“That was an awesome performance,” Smith said of the mark. “They did it without anyone to really push them, which makes it that much more remarkable.”

The Panthers' performances in the relay and the high jump were the team's only victories in individual events, but the team had a couple of near misses. Rodriguez led a 2-3 finish by Powell in the 400, with teammate Stephanie Paul right behind.

MacDonald added a runner-up finish in the long jump, falling just two inches shy of her season best mark.

As a team, the Panthers scored 88.5 team points to place third, half a point in front of Worland. Lovell scored the team title with 120 points. Cody placed as the runner-up with a score of 106.5.

“We worked them hard this week, so I knew their legs would be dead,” said Smith. “The kids really performed very well. I thought we did very well.”

Powell returns to action on Saturday at Lovell. The meet takes the place of the Sheridan Invite that may appear on some early track calendars.
