Murphey stable after surgery

A Lovell Middle School student is expected to return to school this week after undergoing weekend surgery stemming from an accident that occurred Saturday morning at a Powell Middle School track meet.

The student, identified by Lovell Middle School officials as CJ Murphey, was struck in the head by a discus thrown by another competitor during warmups.

Murphey was standing near the discus warm-up area when he was struck in the side of the head by an implement thrown by another competitor a few feet away. Murphey was not in the discus landing area at the time he was struck.

According to Lovell Middle School officials on Monday morning, members of Murphey's family said he was doing well after the surgery. Murphy was said to be sitting up and eating. He was expected to return to class later this week.
