Boys basketball, wrestling get early nods
The first polls of the winter sports season have been released and fans of the Powell Panthers learned the state’s voters believe there could be a lot to cheer about during the colder winter months. Both the boys’ basketball team and the wrestling team received preseason rankings.

Well, that didn’t take long.
Just days after the college football world appeared to solidify its stability with an announcement of the format and payout structure for its new playoff system, which will begin in 2014, the landscape is once more in chaos. Maryland’s announcement Monday that it was defecting from the ACC and Rutgers’ subsequent announcement on Tuesday that it was sliding from the Big East to the Big Ten-which-is-really-12-and-will-now-become-14.

Andressa Augusto calmly sank a pair of free throws with seconds remaining Friday night to help the Northwest College Trappers avenge an earlier loss to Williston State College, 65-64. The Trappers also defeated the Northwest All-Stars 67-19 over the weekend.

Awards roll in for PHS football
Twelve Panther football players earned all-conference honors while nine of those also earned all-state accolades as the list of post-season honors poured in for the Panthers late last week. The announcements were made late last week by the Wyoming Coaches’ Association.

NWC topples Williston, Northeastern
The Northwest College Trapper men’s basketball team improved to 5-2 this season with an 80-67 victory over Williston State on Friday night, followed by a 70-61 victory over Northeastern on Saturday. Both victories came as part of the First Bank of Wyoming Shootout.

Northwest men fall twice in Georgia
The No. 18 Northwest College Trappers were eliminated from national tournament play Tuesday morning with a 2-0 loss to No. 8 Cincinnati State Tech in men’s soccer action. This time, there will be no last-minute miracles to extend the season.

Williston tournament unkind to NWC men
The Northwest College men’s basketball team dropped its first decisions of the 2012-13 hoop season last weekend in North Dakota with tournament losses to North Idaho and Williston State College. Despite the results, Trapper head coach Brian Erickson was pleased with the effort showcased by his squad.

Hail to that Panther team and a hearty congratulations as well.
Ask just about anyone who has been in that position, and almost unanimously they’ll tell you that one of sports’ hardest accomplishments is to repeat as a champion. Sure, you have the advantage of having gone through it all and knowing what it takes, but you’re also in the position where it seems the whole darn world is rolling up its sleeves to take its best shot at you.

Late TD lifts PHs to repeat 3A title
Dewey Schwahn caught the game-winning touchdown with 5:35 to play on Friday. From there the defense of the No. 1 Powell Panthers did what it had done all season to wrap up a 13-10 state championship victory over No. 2 Star Valley in Laramie.
