Digging ‘em early
Huge beet crop spells early start
In the first week of September, sugar beets were already flying out of the ground in an earlier-than-usual opening to the fall harvest in Western Sugar Company’s Lovell factory district.
By every measure, that’s a good thing.

Ralston rocks for Mule Days
Population in the tiny town of Ralston in northwest Wyoming swells ten-fold for a few days each June.
It's all about mules. It's always the week of Father's Day.
Events begin Wednesday, June 13 and last through Sunday, June 17. It’s the 15th anniversary edition of Jake Clark's Mule Days to roll through Ralston, seven miles west of Powell in Park County. Mule Days brings crowds of up to 1,500 to the hamlet, which is home to a population of scantly over 100 for the rest of the year.
Oil boom talk getting ahead of itself here
But potential for Mowry shale drilling is cautiously real
No, you won’t see oilfield servicing trucks jamming motel parking lots anytime soon.
Or even more to the point, the Oilfield Motel sign won’t hang this summer.
The buzz that had a large integrated energy services company buying a local motel spread like wildfire in the community in the last week. It turns out the story had more legs than traction.
Talk had it that the Super 8 Motel had been purchased — or at least a large bloc of rooms had been leased for the summer — to house employees of the oil and gas servicing company. Melody Robertson, manager of the Super 8, says there is no truth to the story, and there has been no contact for large scale room rental.
Chamber: ‘We’re going to turn it around’
It was a night for apologies.
At a special Monday night membership meeting announced by email, officers and board members of the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce followed up the surprise dismissal of the chamber manager and office staff with a pledge to retool the organization to serve members.

LIFE IN CHEYENNE The 70 percent rule: Fairness to Wyoming contractors
The date of Jan. 17, 2011, was a beachhead day for employment of Wyoming contractors and the use of Wyoming suppliers on publicly-funded capital construction projects.
It puts into statute in capital letters the words “Wyoming Preference.”
LIFE IN CHEYENNE: Where are the constitutionalists on this one?
Why am I saddened and disappointed by the House passage of HB 74 last week to supposedly underscore the “Validity of Marriage?”
Under Wyoming law, marriage is defined as a civil contract between a man and a woman. It’s been that way since territorial days, even before Wyoming was a state. It’s been my satisfying experience to be married under that Wyoming law for nearly 50 years.
