Bear visits Powell, draws crowd

A black bear in a tree east of the Park County Annex building Thursday morning prompted a gathering of law enforcement and Wyoming Game & Fish officers as well as several onlookers.

After a long dry spell, the dam seems to have broken for doctor recruitment at Powell Valley Healthcare.

 

As local and state governments headed into fiscal year 2014 on Monday, they all had at least one thing in common: budget cuts.

The state of Wyoming, Park County, the cities of Powell and Cody, Park County School District No. 1 and Northwest College all had to trim expenses during the past few months as revenue estimates continued to remain lower than previous levels. Now, they are challenged with providing the same services — or as close to the same as possible — with less money.

Two grizzly encounters by locals in as many weeks — an attack on a man irrigating on the South Fork last week and a near-miss in a Forest Service campground on the North Fork June 6 — underscore the increasing need to be bear aware as the grizzly population continues to grow.
