Anya Feichtl, the lead architect on the project, said her team anticipates construction to be finished in late summer 2009.

The interior of the former gas station will be remodeled to accommodate art shows, meetings, classes and other events. Plans also include a kitchen area to allow for food preparation. An additional restroom — with outside access — and a storage space will be added onto the east end of the building.

The design of the exterior space has focused on making the area more comfortable during hot summer months.

A canopy over the stage, wooden pergolas and fabric “sails” will provide shade and a water spray pad for children will be located on the east side of the lot. Low-maintenance, drought-tolerant gardens will dominate the northeast and southwest corners of the plaza.

The building will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified, though the level of certification will depend on a final review of the space.
