SPORTS GUY: A winter flurry

Quick hits and short bits in an attempt to clear my notebook and my mind, just in time for the holiday season:

• It’s hard to say who had the more positive weekend, basketball-wise around Powell this past week. The Trapper women picked up a pair of huge conference wins on the home floor while both Powell High School teams took to the road to begin 3A West play. Both came home with 2-0 records.

• Don’t think the Panther boys’ 2-0 start to 3A West play went unnoticed either. The school picked up a pair of votes in this week’s WyoPreps.com boys’ basketball poll. The team hasn’t cracked the top five yet, but simply getting recognition is an indication that things are off to a good start for head coach Mike Heny’s sophomore campaign.

• Speaking of good starts, Powell’s Randi Asay and Leslie Thronberg currently rank No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in assists per game in Class 3A girls’ basketball. Asay is currently dishing 4.4 dimes per contest while Thronberg is close behind with four assists per game. Thronberg is also third in 3A in steals, with four per game.

• On the boys’ side, early season kudos go to Jacob Beuster, second in 3A in rebounding with 11.2 boards per game; Zane Bushnell, ninth in assists with 3.4 per contest, and Cooper Wise, No. 10 in steals per game with 2.8 swipes per outing.

• I know she didn’t mention the climate as a reason for resigning, but Trapper Athletic Director Andy Ward might want to point out to outgoing NWC volleyball coach Flavia Siqueira that Tuesday’s low temperature in Ocala, Fla., where Siqueira is bound, was 25 degrees.

• By contrast, it only got down to 27 overnight here in Powell. How could anyone leave this balmy environment?

• Here’s a tip of the ol’ ballcap to the Northwest College athletic training staff and Powell paramedics for their prompt and thorough response to an injury at last Saturday’s basketball game between the Northwest College Trappers and Casper College. You hate to see a fluke injury like the one that befell Casper freshman Kaylin Evans in that contest, but it was nice to see the professional response to the emergency by all present.

• BYU, Northern Illinois, Troy, Louisville, Boise State, San Diego State, Hawaii, Florida International, Air Force, West Virginia, Missouri, Maryland, Baylor, Oklahoma State, SMU, Kansas State, North Carolina, Nebraska, Clemson, Miami (Fla.), Georgia, Florida State, Texas Tech, Alabama, Mississippi State, TCU, Oklahoma, STanford, Ohio State, Miami (Ohio), Texas A&M, Pitt, Nevada and Auburn.

• Thirty-five bowl games? And the BCS crowd uses kids being busy over final exams and the holidays as a justification for why we can’t have a playoff?

• While we’re on the subject of college football, the Big Ten Conference announced this week that it would name its new six-teams divisions Legends and Leaders beginning next season. No, I’m not making that up.

• How many millions that could have gone toward student scholarships did the Big Ten spend to come up with that woeful final decision? Perhaps even more troubling, if Legends and Leaders were considered the two best options, yours truly shudders to think what some of the rejected choices may have been.

• Just in case the Mountain West gains two more over the next few months, allow me to throw my two cents on the table right now for divisions named Surf and Turf.
