Girls soccer falls to 4A teamsThe Powell High School girls' soccer team came up short on the scoreboard Saturday, but saw plenty of cause for optimism as they began their season in Cody. Powell fell 3-0 in jamboree action to Star Valley before giving up a 6-1 decision to Green River. The Panthers' expected three-game weekend was trimmed back to two after Rock Springs failed to make the journey north.
“We were still able to get a good indication of where we're at,” said Powell head coach Brad Hammond. “We were missing a couple starters on defense and we were breaking in a new goalkeeper, so it isn't surprising that we had some defensive breakdowns.”
The Panthers opened their day against Star Valley and, after surrendering an early goal, settled in and played much of the first half on even terms until the Braves capitalized on one of those defensive breakdowns Hammond alluded to just before the halftime whistle.
Star Valley added a third goal on a precision cross which beat strong defenisve coverage from the Panthers on the play.
Powell made numerous runs in the offensive zone, but was unable to get on the scoreboard in the contest.
Against Green River, the Panthers got on the scoreboard first thanks to a goal off the foot of Shelby Willis seven minutes into the contest. Katie Kipp smacked a pair of shots off the goal frame in the early going as well.
“The first 15 minutes or so, we were down at their end of the field quite a bit,” Hammond said. “We had some good chances, but only got one goal out of it. Toward the end, we ran out of gas and Green River was able to pile the goals up on us. We're a little out of shape still.”
Despite the outcome, the Panthers' coach was inspired by the overall tone of what he saw.
“We're much further along than we were at this stage last season,” Hammond said. “Overall, we're a lot better. We've got a lot of improvement to do and things to work on this week, but this was a good indication of where we're at.”
The Panthers return to action this Friday and Saturday for home games against Newcastle and Torrington.
