A Few Things That Need Noting

A much overdue congratulations to the many folks who helped make the Garland Canal Centennial such a marvelous success. In particular, thanks to Shoshone Water District Superintendent Bryant Startin and Homesteader Museum Curator Director Rowene Weems for their excellence and hard work showcasing the community. It was fun, enlightening, even sobering, taking a few moments to step back in time and learning what it took to carve Powell out of the arid desert.

On another note: Congratulations to the young men and women for a successful prom this past weekend. It’s always nice to see our future leaders having fun while conducting themselves in a safe and responsible manner.

And a final note: If you want proof of the depth and and possibilities of the enduring human spirit, look no further than this past weekend’s activities in Washington with the unveiling of the Heart Mountain Foundation Wyoming’s plans for an interpretive learning center at the former internment camp.

Former Sen. Alan Simpson and former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta’s friendship born during the sad days of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center and continuing these many years later is truly heartfelt. Their bond combined with the tireless efforts of Dave Reetz and the others at the foundation could one day soon mean a national park for the area. The events at the relocation center were truly a sad part of this country’s history. Thanks to these folks, we can remember and hopefully make sure such a event never takes place again.
